September 19th marked the opening of GSD&M’s rock poster-themed art gallery. Once accepting our invitation to participate, the Sanctuary creative team each began designing their one-of-a-kind posters. Displayed on the top row above, each designer was pleased with how his piece turned out. Check out details on each design and print plus more pictures from the show below!

The Black Angels by Anthony Sanchez: “More times than not, imagery associated with The Black Angels is one of psychedelia. While I think this type of representation reflects the band well, I wanted to take a little bit of a side step to that general interpretation of how the public sees this band. I guess in general, I wanted to take what The Black Angels sound and vision is to me and use my voice to create a poster that I would love to see and own, also create. I used the idea of a fine leather bound book. I wanted the representation of the book to be enough that one might associate that with the bible but vague enough to see that it may just be a leather book. The creating of the ‘logo’ or the bands name was something that I was seeking to get just right. I wanted to create the look of inset type or something embossed. This poster was created with only the use of two colors, white and metallic gold. I used the process of half-toning both the white and the gold in a way that when they combined that they would create the look I was after. Specifically, in the lettering, I manipulated the halftones to create three colors, the white highlight. gold inner shadow, and the black low light to push the text into the ‘book’. The size of the poster is 13″x20″ and was hand printed, being signed and numbered in a series of 25. This poster will never be reprinted.“

Dana Falconberry by Dan Grissom: “I wanted to go with a mysterious, religious icon feel for this poster. I found one of Dana’s press photos taken by Sierra DaSilva that worked perfectly as the focal point. To create an older look, I used an etching halftone method on Dana’s face instead of the standard dot halftone. So as not to detract from the image, I kept the text simple and classic. This was a three color print using burgundy, metallic gold, and teal on French Speckletone Cream paper.”

Eagle Eye Williamson by Jed Taylor: “Eagle Eye Williamson is a friend and great musician. He spoke of his new album Black Gold II and that’s really all it took. EEW has a Native American feel to his art and a beat to his music that are truly inspiring. I have been dying to print on gold paper again, and this poster was the perfect opportunity. Printed with black, red and white flat ink, it came out just how I wanted. Always thankful for the opportunity to create an art piece, especially for the likes of GSD&M.“

The Faint by Lance McIlhaney: “The Faint is one of my favorite bands, and Danse Macabre is in my top 5 favorite albums so I jumped at the chance to work on this tour. The Faint is glitchy, unique and raw so I wanted to do something that sort of captures the spirit of their sound. Clean, vector, heavy concept based posters are very popular right now, so I chose to flip the norm and do something more guttural and DIY. The entire thing was drawn with a sharpie, cleaned up a bit in photoshop, watercolor added and printed in 4 color process print. This was truly one of the most selfish posters I have ever made, with zero intentions of pleasing anybody else. Sometimes you just gotta release the fury.“

Brian Imler is one of the newest additions to the Sanctuary staff, and while he spends most of his time pumping out custom tees for anyone from your next door neighbor to Alamo Drafthouse to Bazaarvoice, he is also an incredibly talented artist.

For the second year in row, the Sanctuary team headed to the Telluride Film Festival to execute an on-site activation for Turner Classic Movies.

In similar fashion, Sanctuary coordinated with TCM to brand a 10×15 space outside the theatre that included a custom branded tent, custom banners and t-shirts that were pre-printed as well as printed on-site during the festival.

Sanctuary handed out around 1,000 shirts in style during the festival, with attendees receiving them hot off the press. This year’s designs were created by an in-house TCM designer and were a hit with the crowds. When the Sanctuary team wasn’t printing, they made a point to enjoy the beautiful town of Telluride. Notable star sightings this year included Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck.

Starting May 27, Hat Creek Burger – Westlake will extend their Sunday hours to be open until 9:30 p.m. The location is kicking off its new schedule with the first ever Sunday Funday! The weekly event will feature fun for the whole family with live music from local artists, face paint, a balloon clown and $2 beer, wine and small shakes. The Sanctuary El Camino will be serving up free shirts on-demand for the first 100 people, so be sure to get there early!

The fun starts at 2:30 p.m! Bring the whole family, grab a burger and kick off Memorial Day weekend the right way!

The Westlake location is the most recent Hat Creek restaurant to pop up in Austin. The store opened its doors in September 2011 and is conveniently located at the intersection of Bee Caves and 360.

Rated one of Austin’s Top 10 Recreation Events and  listed as one of the Top 50 open water swims in the U.S. and Top 100 in the world, The Money Box Cap 2k is the only downhill swim in Texas.  The event supports clean water, health & fitness, and this year has a goal to raise over $20,000 to benefit the Prostate Cancer Foundation for research and  Us TOO International for support, education and awareness.

Favored to repeat is 2011 Champion Ted Singley from Southlake, Texas.  Ted’s older brother, Wil Singley, preceded Ted as a The Money Box Cap 2k double winner.  Singley’s older sister, Claire won the Girls High School Division 4 times and his mother, Catherine, who will compete again this year, has been a division winner.

Other notable participants for the 2012 edition are Australian, Max Halson, Colorado’s Eney Jones, former SMU All-American, Bobby Patten, and Jim Montgomery, a Triple Olympic Gold Medalist.

The race can be viewed from the Mopac pedestrian bridge. There will be no spectator access at Red Bud Isle.  Media spots are currently available aboard Capital Cruises double-decker paddlewheel, the Pride & Joy.  Media can also access the race finish at the Texas Rowing Center dock.

Race organizers ask everyone out on the hike and bike trail on the morning of Saturday, May 5, to wear blue in support of Prostate Cancer. If you’re in need of blue, the Sanctuary El Camino will be serving up shirts on-site during the event.

Colin’s Hope, an Austin-based nonprofit organization, was started by Jeff and Jana Holst after the loss of their 4-year-old son in a drowning accident.  The organization, named after their son Colin, now creates and supports programs that aid in preventing children from drowning.

For children ages 4 and under, drowning is the number one cause of death. Through increasing water safety awareness and working to improve standards in the community, Colin’s Hope is fighting to lower the number of children and families affected by drowning every year.

This Saturday, January 21st, Colin’s Hope is throwing the Best Day Ever Bash to prevent childhood drowning. The bash will be held at Empire Automotive from 8-11 p.m. and will feature music from More Cowbell and DJ Kurv, and tasty eats from The Side Bar. That alone makes a great party, but add in a water inspired art auction and the Sanctuary El Camino serving up event t-shirts on-site and before you know it, you’ve got the Best. Day. Ever.

This one’s on us.

As you (hopefully) already know, South by Southwest 2012 is rapidly approaching. As of today, we are officially 8 weeks out from the festival’s opening day. That may seem like plenty of time to prepare, but trust us: it’s less than you think.

As you may not already know, the City of Austin recently released a brand new process for obtaining Amplified Sound and Temporary Change of Use permits for your SXSW event. The new process states that permits must be obtained 30 days prior to the scheduled event, which means February 8th for all events hosted on Day 1 of the festival. Eight weeks out doesn’t seem as long now, does it?

So, for those of you with already planned SXSW events, go apply for your permits.

For those of you who don’t have events planned but think you might have the slightest potential to host a SXSW event, go apply for your permits.

Here’s why: In the months leading up to SXSW, the Sanctuary gets increasingly busy. When March 1 hits, it’s like a hurricane landed at our shop. A significant amount of our clientele during SXSW come to us within two weeks of their scheduled event. The same is true for out-of-town companies who want to throw events. There will be last minute events planned just waiting for the right venue to party, and applying for permits proactively could make you a pretty penny. Because of the new process, last minute events must find venues that have previously obtained permits… and that venue might as well belong to you.

This Thursday, January 19th, the City’s Music Division and Office of Special Events are partnering with Austin Music People and Texas Bar & Nightclub Alliance to co-host an Open House regarding the new process. The event is a great chance to get more information regarding events, permitting and amplified sound. If SXSW involvement is part of your business plan, this is a can’t miss. The open house is being held at Historic ACL Studio from 5-8 p.m, and is free to the public. Don’t pass up the opportunity to make 2012 your best SXSW yet.
